The much-anticipated autumn statement was delivered by Jeremy Hunt on 17th November 2022.
He cast a gloomy shadow over the health of the UK economy over the next 2 years and has put a squeeze on wealthier taxpayers.
The important aspects of the squeeze are as follows:
The 45% income tax rate will kick in for incomes over £125,000 (previously £150,000)
The personal allowance and 40% tax thresholds will be frozen
National insurance thresholds will also be frozen
The dividend allowance of £2,000 will be cut to £1,000 from next April 2023
The capital gains tax annual exemption will be cut from £12,300 to £6,000 in 2023 and £3,000 from April 2024
On a broader perspective, there will be an increase in the windfall tax for energy companies and the energy price guarantee for an average household will rise to £3,000 from £2,500 from April, and pensions and benefits will increase with inflation.
